1766 Charleville |
|
In 1763 France adopted a new model infantry musket, much stronger than the previous models, to answer the accelerated fighting during the War of the Seven Years which ended that same year. The new musket was too heavy and was replaced three years later by a modified version known as The Model 1766. More than 150,000 Model 1766 were manufactured. The Model 1766 was replaced and returned for storage upon arrival of the 1770 and 1771 Models. In 1776 the American Independence War started and France happened to have an abundant supply of the Model 1766 muskets and was able to supply large quantities to the United States Army. |
